Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.  And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”  And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.”  And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”  And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

(Mark 10:46-52)

Today’s Message “Don’t Allow the Crowd to Keep You from Jesus”

The story of Blind Bartimaeus is very significant. It is the last miracle Mark records in His Gospel of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Jesus was passing through Jericho to attend the Passover , where as believers we recall is where he was arrested in a garden, illegally tried at night, and then crucified. There was a great crowd there on the road—the Jews would travel to Jerusalem every year to Jerusalem to observe the Passover according to their custom. Many pilgrims were traveling on this road for this with their families, and also their animals to be sacrificed. Also alongside the road were those who were too poor to make the trip, those who were broken, those who were ill and couldn’t travel. Here was Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus was blind; he couldn’t work; he was fully dependent on the mercy of others. He would sit outside the gate everyday panhandling in the hope that passers by would show compassion and place alms on his cloak which he would have spread out next to him. He had heard that the master was passing through and he called out.; but sometimes along the road there are distractions that get in our way. The crowd tried to silence Bartemaeus. Instead of caving into peer pressure or being crushed under the weight of embarrassment, he wasn’t going to give in to the disruption or surrender to the distraction. He pushed harder-he got louder. Then he called louder, and Louder, and LOUDER! Bartemaeus wanted his healing. He wanted to see Jesus. He wasn’t going to let anyone or anything keep him from Jesus! We musn’t let anything or anyone keep us from Jesus! We must not allow the world to stand in between us and the Lord. We must not allow the crowds to come in between us and our blessing. We must keep pressing in. God is not a God of partiality, just as he blessed Bartimaeus, he wants to bless you. KEEP CRYING OUT!

So in looking at the verses when Jesus called out to Bartimaeus, in verse 49, that was his call to faith. Jesus commanded him to come.

In Verse 50 Bartimaeus shows his faith. He left his cloak which he used to receive alms, he threw it down and sprang up and went to Jesus! There was no going back, he was all in!

In Verse 52, we see the result of his faith : Bartimaeus received his healing.

You can receive healing too—call out to Jesus! Trust in Him

JESUS LOVES YOU!
