15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (Jas 2:15-17)
At God’s Church we remember that faith is an action Word! We walk out our faith the way the Bible shows us to not merely in word but in deed. We meet the needs of the hungry by feeding them physically and spiritually. We comfort the lonely and point the way to the lost. We represent Christ being a beacon of His light and an ambassador of His love.
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:31-40)
When we reach out to meet people’s needs, we are serving Jesus! When we feed someone, we are feeding Jesus! When we give someone clothing, we’re clothing Jesus! When we comfort someone, we are comforting Jesus! Food Ministry is about so much more…than food. Of course, it is important to meet people’s physical needs, but in doing so it provides a backdrop for meeting people’s Spiritual needs as well. We don’t just pass out food, we share Christ’s heart, His love, and His compassion with a world of lonely, lost and dying people who need the Savior, the only one who can ever satisfy their soul. We don’t merely “pass out bread” but we serve up the bread of life, Jesus! The Word of God tells us in Matthew 4:4, “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Are you hungry, lonely, in need of prayer?
